Driving forces of technological change in medicine: Radical Innovations induced by side effects and their impact on society and healthcare

The issues of technological innovations in medicine are different from innovation in other technological fields. In other areas, the changes are driven by supply-demand factors whereas in medicine it has many drastic social implications which will surface from feedback after application of new developments, especially related to side effects. Though many aspects of innovation in medical technology has been studied, there are some aspects which are not examined seriously. One such area is the incremental innovations with lower side effects and emerging parallel pathways for treatment of side effects called adverse effect-induced innovations (82 Refs.).
