It is a commonplace to say that continuing professional development is vital for the modern information professional, to keep pace with the fast changing world of information and to be able to meet and adapt to the new roles and new challenges which are continually emerging. Of course, professional development in the broader view is not simply a matter of learning about new technology systems or techniques (important though this aspect may be) but also of reflecting critically on our professional practice in the light of changes in the world around; comparing one's own experience with and testing it against the experience of others; and, with this inspiration, standing back and re-thinking our approach and translating this into practical action.
