As predicted by various academic studies, hydraulic fracking and horizontal drilling has done much to cause a revolution in both the U.S. and the world's energy markets.161 The successful use of hydraulic fracturing and horizontal drilling in the U.S. "has created an abundance of natural gas and crude oil, but is has also opened a Pandora's box"162 of economic and financial success to somehow be balanced with protection of the environment and public health by appropriate, effective, and well-coordinated federal, state, and local legislation and regulation.
