Summer is ending with gasoline profit margins for retailers at the lowest point of the season. Nationwide rack-to-retail gasoline margins plunged to 12.2cts/gal, the slimmest of the summer. Profits are down 45% in three weeks. This week alone they fell 23%.rnSoutheastern markets took the biggest hit. Regional profits slipped to 7.9cts/gal, the smallest amount of 2010. When you factor in credit card processing costs (several cents per gallon) the margin number shrinks even more.
