With COVID-19 cases surging across the United States, AAA is forecasting a drop of at least 10% in travel during the extended Thanksgiving holiday weekend. The decline would be the largest one-year decrease since the 2008 drop caused by the Great Recession, the organization said. And even with such a big decline, AAA said it believes its forecast might turn out to be optimistic, since it was based on mid-October models. In recent weeks, COVID-19 cases have surged, and states have started reinstituting lockdown measures in an attempt to contain the outbreak. The CDC on Thursday urged Americans to avoid holiday travel.
