Corrosion can be a problem for underground storage tanks – particularly those containing ultra-low sulfur diesel fuel. Conscientious efforts to monitor fuel quality and water intrusion into stored fuel can go a long way toward preventing what could otherwise turn out to be potentially expensive problems. Speaking at the recent SIGMA virtual conference, Brad Hoffman, vice president of engineering and research and development at Tanknology, outlined how owners can monitor their tanks and head off problems: 1. Keep lids and other access points tightly shut to prevent water from entering tanks in the first place. 2. Use a “good, old-fashioned” gauge stick, which can be a better way to identify water intrusion than a typical automatic tank gauge, Hoffman said. Working with a gauge stick, use water-finding paste that’s compatible with the type of fuel stored in the tank and follow the directions carefully.
