Marathon Petroleum Corp. will discontinue the Marathon Visa and Marathon Proprietary Credit Card programs effective Feb. 1, 2019, the major told its jobbers and dealers in a letter. As first reported by Oil Express, Marathon said it will channel its resources toward growing its new loyalty offering, MakeItCount, in which it has partnered with Southwest Airlines, La Quinta and the Arbor Day Foundation. MakeItCount allows loyalty club members to save on fuel, hotels, and airfare, as well as to invest in the environment. Jobbers and credit card experts say proprietary gas cards’ share of transactions at the pump is declining and currently is in the single-digit percent range. Tom Randolph, a credit card consultant and former executive with ExxonMobil, said that in 2012 proprietary fuel credit cards accounted for about 5.26% of the total credit card volume. Depending on brand, it is now less than that, he said.
