Ideally, there should only be one scheme for training dynamic positioning (DP) operators, which is recognised universally by flag states, regulators, shipowners and charterers. However, the industry still seems to be heading towards the operation of two separate training regimes. These are the longstanding Nautical Institute scheme and the recently introduced DNV GL SeaSkill set of DP operator recommended practices. According to C-Mar Group chairman Chris Hawdon they should be amalgamated into one scheme that not only meets the requirements of the regulators and flag states, but also the needs of vessel operators and oil companies. This one scheme should also follow the framework laid down by the International Marine Contractors Association (IMCA).
