Not content with operating the first offshore vessels powered by liquefied natural gas (LNG) in the US, Shane Guidry, Harvey Gulf's chairman and CEO, recently took the company in another direction as a builder of LNG-fuelled vessels for the US market. Acquiring two yards that specialise in building offshore vessels might seem a bit risky at the present time, given the state of the market, but Harvey Gulf has its eyes on another prize. In due time, it might well build LNG-fuelled offshore vessels at the yards, but in the short to medium term, it anticipates that there will be plenty of opportunities to build other LNG ships. In July, Harvey Gulf confirmed that the company was moving into the shipbuilding business with the acquisition of Trinity Yachts in New Orleans and Gulf Coast Shipyard, which is based in Gulfport, Mississippi. The latter built Harvey Energy, Harvey Gulf's first dual-fuel vessel, and is working on five more vessels of the same Vard Marine 1 33 design. The company is creating an affiliated company, Harvey Shipyard Group, to manage its shipbuilding assets and plans to build on its success in building the first LNG-powered offshore vessel in the US by building for other owners.
