Subsea 7 to build port facility for pipelay operations

Edinho Araujo, Brazil's minister of the Secretaria Especial de Portos (Special Ports Department) has given the green light for Subsea 7, which currently has eight vessels operating in Brazil, to go ahead and invest B$103 million (US$29.8 million) in a new facility in an area that has been much sought after for more than a decade. There have been various plans to develop this strategically located area for a new container terminal near Paranagua, a general cargo facility and an offshore support base, but Subsea 7 has become the first company to be granted the much-coveted Terminal de Uso Privado (TUP, or Private Use Terminal) status for Pontal do Parana. Having secured TUP status, it plans to operate a 300m long berth, which will be used for transporting carbon steel pipes, rigid and semi-rigid, and various other structures and components for subsea systems. The first phase of setting up the installation will create 300 full-time jobs, and the second phase will lead to 700 jobs and more than a thousand indirectly.
