According to Carlo Fuse, from Saipem, there is a growing need for 'heavy duty' subsea field development assets. "This is especially true in the umbilicals, flexible flowlines and risers market segments," he explained, noting that the associated operational challenges increasingly require dedicated 'specialty' vessels. Mr Fuse explained that more than 10,000km of flowlines are expected to be installed worldwide, with around 1,000 prospects planned in the next four years. In excess of US$200 billion of global capex has been allocated to water depths that exceed 500m, he explained.
