Arctech Helsinki Shipyard in Helsinki, Finland, has laid the keel for the first icebreaking safety standby vessel or emergency response and rescue vessel (ERRV) it is building for Sovcomflot in Russia. Newbuilding 512 is the first of three icebreaking standby ships for Russia's largest shipping company. Once delivered, the vessels will operate in offshore Sakhalin on behalf of the operator of the Sakhalin-2 project, Sakhalin Energy investment Co Ltd (SEIC). The icebreaking vessels are designed for standby and rescue duties and for oil spill recovery. They can also be used as supply vessels for cargo transfer and also act as diving support vessels. They incorporate a moonpool for this purpose.
