With jackup rates in Asia up almost 25% from the same time last year and the list of major offshore projects under planning or tendering growing by the day, the future for Asian vessel owners is looking buoyant. However, concerns still prevail regarding rates and the number of newbuilds using Asia as a testing ground following delivery from Chinese shipyards, prior to moving to other regions. Owners and chartering managers have all expressed optimism for the next few years and believe that the worst is behind them. There are still, however, lingering concerns about future overbuilding and the ever-increasing costs of purchasing and operating new tonnage.
