From this summer, thousands of miners suffering from osteoarthritis of the knee as a result of their work will be able to apply for compensation from the State through the Industrial Injuries Disablement Benefit scheme.rnDue to the physical nature of coal miners' work, involving regular heavy lifting, kneeling, squatting and crawling, it is thought that tens of thousands of retired miners now have osteoarthritisrnof the knee, commonly known as 'miners' knee'. It can be a significant cause of disability, sufficient in advanced cases to require surgical knee joint replacement. The main symptoms include knee pain, knee swelling, stiffness and reduced mobility.
