It is our destiny to poison our planet. At first we weren't that good at it. Attempts by early civilisations probably amounted to no more than a tiny rash, which the planet probably didn't even notice. But with the industrial revolution we really seemed to be getting the hang of it. Since then we have gone from strength to strength. In fact we have become truly life-threatening.
