The Major Incident Investigation Board (MIIB) was formed to investigate the Buncefield incident of December 2005. Its purpose was to make recommendations to help ensure that this kind of incident does not occur again. The MIIB made a number of recommendations associated with the design and operation of Buncefield fuel storage tanks. In its final report, recommendation 8 says that industry should investigate alternative methods of tank level measurement and level detection.
