Senior academics from universities across the UK have voiced their concerns about the Government's withdrawal of routine HSE inspections in most workplaces and the "undermining" of health and safety law enforcement. In a letter published in The Guardian newspaper last month, the eight academics also argue that there is no evidence to back up the Government's assertion that the burden of "excessive" health and safety rules and regulations has become too great for businesses. Instead, they point to studies in North America and elsewhere that suggest that effective health and safety standards "stimulate innovation and growth".
