Scottish Government consults on FAI changes

The scottish government has announced plans to speed up and modernise the process of Fatal Accident Inquiries (FAIs) but says it will not introduce a mandatory time limit for the inquiries to be completed. The proposals follow recommendations made by Lord Cullen in his 2009 Review of Fatal Accident Inquiry legislation to modernise the FAI system in Scotland. They also build on earlier work by the Crown Office and Procurator Fiscal Service (COPFS) to address delays in holding FAIs -including the much-criticised delay of nearly five years between the Super Puma helicopter crash in April 2009 and the FIA in January 2014.
