Mesothelioma quest

Research to discover whether annual examinations for high-risk occupations could lead to an earlier diagnosis of mesothelioma has been flagged as one of ten research priorities for mesothelioma research in the UK. The ten research priorities emerged after discussions with researchers, patients and carers facilitated by the James Lind Alliance. The occupational research priority asks: "Does an annual chest x-ray and/or CT scan and medical examination in high-risk occupations (for example carpenters, plumbers. electricians, shipyard workers) lead to earlier diagnosis of mesothelioma?" The other nine priorities focus on medical treatment and interventions. Many cases of mesothelioma are diagnosed at an advanced stage of the disease, which is caused by exposure to asbestos and is almost always fatal.
