Just occasionally a non-fiction book proves to be exceptional - not just in its content but in its writing style too. And this slim book, Professionalism, is such a book, written by Alan Cribb (professor of bioethics and education) and Sharon Gewirtz (professor of education) - both of King's College London. They explain that professionalism is a complex and highly disputed idea, which is of crucial importance in a range of fields, not least of which is health and social care. While 'professionalism' can inspire people by underlining the prestige and value which comes with occupational expertise and impressive qualifications, it can also feel threatening and de-motivating. For example, it could be used to demand ever more from people working in already very challenging circumstances.
