Across the world, April 28 is Workers' Memorial Day. A day when unions, employers and employees come together to "remember the dead and fight for the living", a day to reflect on the many people in countries all around the globe who are killed, seriously injured or made ill while doing their job. In 2010, the UK Government officially recognised Workers' Memorial Day but unions had been marking the day for many years before that. Special events are held throughout the UK. This year's theme is Unionised workplaces are safer workplaces, so the day will highlight the important role union safety reps play in preventing deaths, injury and ill health in workplaces in all sectors. HSE statistics for 2016-17 show 137 workers were fatally injured doing their job in Great Britain during that 12 month period. Being struck by a moving vehicle and falling from a height are the two main causes of fatal injuries at work.
