How often should lifting equipment be examined and by whom? Under the Lifting Operations and Lifting Equipment Regulations 1998 (LOLER) a 'competent' person must undertake a systematic and detailed examination of lifting equipment. The scope of the examination will be decided on by that person, who needs to have appropriate practical knowledge and experience to be able to detect any defects, or to spot weaknesses which might develop into problems likely to adversely affect safety in the continued use of the equipment. The competent person can be an employee but should not be the person responsible for routine maintenance of the equipment, and should be able to make impartial decisions.
