In our previous issue, we discussed developments in Royal Mail's contracted-out occupational health service with its director of corporate responsibility and chief medical officer, Dr Steve Boorman. We now talk to the service provider, Atos Origin. The Royal Mail outsourced its occupational health and employee support services in a £70 million, five-year agreement with SchlumbergerSema, now part of Atos Origin, in August 2002.The deal, which involved around 200 staff working in the Royal Mail's employee health service (EHS) transferring to the supplier under the Transfer of Undertakings (Protection of Employment) Regulations 1981 (TUPE), was recently renegotiated to make it easier for the postal operator's managers to use, provide a broader range of services and shift its focus to prevention and rehabilitation [OH at Work 2006; 2(5): 17-19).
