Average employee absence has fallen from 8 days to 7.4 days a year, according to the latest annual absence survey from the CIPD. It also found that the average annual cost of absence per employee rose slightly between 2008 and 2009, from £666 to £692.rnThe 10th annual absence survey results from the CIPD are based on replies from 642 organisations employing more than 1.9 million employees. Although the mean absence rate was down by 0.6 days per year in 2009 compared to the previous year, the fall was not uniform across the economy.The CIPD reports only a marginal decrease in the public sector, from 9.8 days per employee a year to 9.7. By contrast, private sector organisations recorded a drop from 7.2 days per employee a year to 6.4 days.
