■ Individuals typically respond to confrontational situations in one of four ways: passive, aggressive, passive-aggressive and assertivern■ These response types are important in the development of stress reactions -and potentially in absence behaviour patternsrn■ Individual behaviour varies according to circumstance, and who they are with, but a person may resort to their natural flight-or-fight survival mechanism when under duressrn■ An understanding of the cause of the passive-aggressive response can help develop strategies to improve working relationships and address behaviour patterns that exacerbate workplace stressrn■ OH professionals should take the lead and focus on developing close relationships with line managers and HR, where they can have greatest influence, through education and training, in improving relationships between employees and managers.
