A 42-year old factory worker who developed asthma from exposure to soldering fumes has received £20,000 compensation after her employer admitted liability for her illness. The woman, from Gateshead, spent up to six hours a day soldering and was diagnosed with occupational asthma only weeks after starting work at Turbo Power Systems Limited. She worked with rosin (colophony)-based soldering wire but was never given any training or warning about the dangers. The woman was soldering in an enclosed space with inadequate extraction, said her solicitor, and within a few weeks began to suffer from difficulty breathing.
