He chief current concern for OH professionals is a 'lack of understanding of OH byline managers'-ahead of 20 other pressing issues, including budget cuts and job insecurity. The finding, from our 2011 survey of OH practice1, confirms what OH nurses and physicians have said anecdotally for years. Open responses to our previous survey2, in 2008, for example, included that line managers have a 'serious misunderstanding of OH'; perceive OH as a 'treatment service','first aid','part of the disciplinary process' or'as sickness absence monitors'; and expect OH to 'sort out their management problems'.
