LEGIONNAIRES' PROSECUTION

A Scottish health board has been fined £24,000 for a breach of the Health and Safety at Work etc Act ig74, after a 64-year-old patient at Hartwoodhill Hospital in Shotts, North Lanarkshire, contracted legionnaires'disease in 2008. An investigation by the HSE found three sources of Legionella bacteria in the hospital water system, including in the shower unit used daily by the patient. Lanarkshire Health Board had not carried out a suitable and sufficient risk assessment and there was no safe system of work to manage and control the risks from the disease, said the HSE.
