The number of workers killed in British workplaces increased last year, according to final figures published by the HSE. The HSE reports that there were 171 deaths reported under RIDDOR for the year April 2010 to March 2011, an increase on the previous year when 147 died, the lowest number on record. This means that the rate of fatal injury is now 0.6 per 100,000 workers, up from 0.5 per 100,000 the previous year.
