The Health and Work Development Unit (HWDU) is to close, the Royal College of Physicians (RCP) has announced. The HWDU was set up in 2006 as the Occupational Health Clinical Effectiveness Unit (OHCEU), a partnership between the Faculty of Occupational Medicine and the RCP. It was initially funded by the NH5 Plus network with a remit to improve the standard of occupational healthcare through the development of evidence-based guidelines and by undertaking national clinical audits. Its clinical director is consultant occupational physician Dr Sian Williams. 'Both the RCP and the Faculty of Occupational Medicine, as partners in the HWDU, are incredibly disappointed by the need to close the unit but it has become impossible to sustain both the unit's and the programme's work in the current financial climate,' said the RCP.
