There are approximately one million people (3.1% of the UK workforce) employed on zero-hours contracts, according to the Chartered Institute of Personnel and Development (CIPD). Its report, Zero-hours contracts: myth and reality, also found that those on zero-hours contracts were as satisfied with their job as the average UK employee, and more happy with their work-life balance than other workers. But others claim that the uncertainty over income and lack of control over hours and when they will be at work puts zero-hours workers at greater risk to their mental health.
