VALUING MENTAL HEALTH

People with mental-health problems-working in industries ranging from construction to entertainment - made an estimated £226 billion gross value-added contribution to UK GDP in 2015, according to a report on how mental health issues in the workplace can be framed differently. The Mental Health Foundation (MHF), Oxford Economics and employee benefits provider Unum carried out research in an attempt to shift the narrative from a discussion of the financial burden of mental health problems to one of the value of mental health as an asset1. The report notes that good workplace mental health is not only important to individuals, but that 'recognising, valuing, improving and protecting mental wellbeing in the workplace makes good business sense'.
