I am an occupational health (OH) generalist.The remit of my team ranges from firefighter fitness, to positive mental health and wellbeing,to OH,to pastoral care. The fire service is a changing and challenging environment. The default retirement age is moving from 55 to 60, and a new firefighter drill-ground assessment fitness test is due to be introduced soon. The budgets for fire services nationally have been subject to major cuts, with Merseyside in particular being badly affected. The challenge is now to attempt to be creative and offer the best possible level of OH support.
