Kansai Electric faces challenges after executive moves, payments scandal

Kansai Electric Power Co. faces challenges to its efforts to build a reactor following the scandal over its executives’ improper receipt of cash and gifts and the departure of several managers with nuclear experience, academics and other officials have said. Takao Matsumura took over October 9 as Kansai Electric’s executive vice president and chief nuclear officer after leading its renewables business, as several nuclear industry veterans stepped down from executive positions. Matsumura replaced Ikuo Morinaka, who held the position for four months. Morinaka, who previously was in charge of fuel cycle issues for Kansai Electric, stepped down after the disclosure that he was among several executives who had received cash and gifts from a former local official over a period of years.
