SENATE PANEL REPORTS OUT NEW START TREATY WITH SOME GOP SUPPORT

Three Republicans joined Democrats on the Senate Foreign Relations Committee in support of the New Strategic Arms Reduction Treaty with Russia last week, giving the Obama Administration a much sought-after bipartisan victory as the panel sent the arms control pact to the Senate floor. Sen. John Kerry (D-Mass.), the chairman of the Senate Foreign Relations Committee, predicted that the treaty isn't likely to be taken up by the full Senate until a post-election lame-duck session in November, but he said he was optimistic about the treaty's ratification chances after it garnered support from some Republicans on the committee.
