Japan-based Hazama Corp. has developed a buffer material to protect against leakage when high-level radioactive waste is packed in metal canisters and placed underground.rnThe material is a type of clay made by mixing bentonite with sand and water. Its multilayered composition prevents groundwater from reaching the radioactive waste being stored underground. The clay's malleable makeup also enables it to withstand earthquake tremors without cracking like concrete. And unlike iron, it won't rust and decompose.
