Environmental Groups Express Opposition To Shipment of Nuclear Waste to SRS

Four environmental groups expressed opposition at a hearing in Columbia, S.C., to allowing shipment of nuclear waste from commercial power plants to the Savannah River Site (SRS) near Aiken, S.C., for storage. Representatives of the Conservation Voters of South Carolina, South Carolina Sierra Club, South Carolina Coastal Conservation League and the Alliance for Nuclear Accountability spoke at a meeting of the Governor's Nuclear Advisory Council. The speakers urged that South Carolina oppose any efforts by the federal government to store the waste temporarily at sites such as SRS, arguing that the temporary storage could effectively become permanent, given the lack of a national repository for spent fuel.
