TDEC Completes Cleanup of Radioactive Waste at Oak Ridge Facility

The Tennessee Department of Environment and Conservation (TDEC) announced completion of the cleanup of radioactive waste stored at a defunct waste disposal company's facility in Oak Ridge. IMPACT Services shut down and filed for bankruptcy in May 2012, leaving a variety of radioactive waste at its processing plant in the East Tennessee Technology Park. Roger Fenner, TDEC's project director, reported approximately 1.6 million pounds of radioactive waste was removed from the site. The materials included waste from research laboratories, universities and nuclear power plants.
