Senator Charles Schumer says the cleanup at a former nuclear test site in West Valley has been shortchanged for years and wants more federal money to move the project along. Schumer is asking Washington to come up with the full $750 million needed to complete the remaining 10-year radioactive cleanup in the West Valley Demonstration Project in Cattaraugus County. "I met with the new nominee for the Assistant Secretary for Energy, which has jurisdiction over West Valley, and I told her I would support her nomination but only if she pushed for an increase in the cleanup funds for West Valley. Those have decreased over the last few years. That means fewer jobs in West Valley and that means the cleanup will go much slower," Schumer said.
