Ikeda named director general of ITER

The six parties in the International Thermonuclear Experimental Reactor (ITER) project announced on November 7 that they have selected Kaname Ikeda, currently Japan's ambassador to Croatia, as director general nominee for the ITER Organization, the entity that will be responsible for building and operating ITER. As part of the settlement whereby Japan accepted the selection of Cadarache, France, as the site for ITER, Japan was provided a number of compensation terms, including European Union support for a Japanese candidate for the organization's top job (NN, Aug. 2005, p. 130).
