EU gives Japan June 30 deadline

Japan remains as adamant as the European Union about seeking to be the site for the International Thermonuclear Experimental Reactor. The Continuing Impasse over the siting of the International Thermonuclear Experimental Reactor (ITER) may be approaching a crisis. On March 7, the European Union's (EU) Research Commission tried to put some teeth in its earlier declaration that it would take over the process and build ITER at Cadarache, in France, by declaring that if Japan does not accept this siting—and its triumph over Japan's proposed site, at Rokkasho-mura—by June 30, the EU would withdraw its offer of "privileged partnership" to Japan.
