Science Committee passes energy legislation, including GNEP

The House Science Committee said yes to the Bush administration's Global Nuclear Energy Partnership (GNEP), but with limitations. The committee's energy package for fiscal year 2007, known as H.R. 5656, imposes restrictions on demonstration projects under GNEP. In introducing the bill for markup on June 27, a day before it was passed by the committee, committee chairman Sherman Boehlert (R., N.Y.) said that it gives GNEP "an amber light—embracing research, but requiring 'more analysis before large-scale demonstrations of fast reactors or a fuel test facility can proceed."
