High U-235 content in U tails fuels USEC's interest

USEC Inc. has contacted the Department of Energy about its interest in reenriching uranium contained in cylinders of depleted uranium— known as tails—so that it can be turned into fuel for commercial reactors. USEC, which is struggling financially to bring its American Centrifuge uranium enrichment program to fruition, revealed the news of its possible DOE tails plan on May 4, when it issued a report on the company's first-quarter earnings.
