NRC keeps its focus on safety

The nuclear regulatory Commission held its 20th Regulatory Information Conference (RIC) March 11-13 in Rockville, Md., at a hotel catercorner from its headquarters buildings. Over the years the conference has grown into a major event for the nuclear community, with sessions generally including agency officials as speakers and representatives of regulated organizations-and people who do business with them-in the audience. The RIC serves to present the agency's current policies and approaches in a variety of areas, including its rapidly growing responsibility for the licensing and regulation of new power reactors. The NRC intends to make the main speeches and presentation slides available on its Web site, at . Following are some observations from an attendee.
