Italy's ban on nuclear energy, which had existed for more than 20 years, has been lifted following a July 9 vote in the Senate in favor of the new legislation. This historic decision paves the way for the rein-troduction of nuclear energy, as called for 'by President Silvio Berlusconi. Under the legislation, the government will have six months to choose sites for new nuclear energy plants, and a new nuclear safety agency will be set up.rnFollowing the vote, Energy Minister Claudio Scajola said that a number of local authorities have told him that they are interested in having a plant sited in their territories. Scajola had previously said that Italy will start work on its first new nuclear plant by 2013.
