The article "Historic K-25 building at Oak Ridge coming down" (AW, Mar. 2009, p. 74) brought back much nostalgia. My first job, as a chemical engineer right out of the Cooper Union in 1944, was on the Manhattan Project for Kellex Corporation, the designer of K-25. My first assignment was to inspect 60 miles of steel pipe that was internally plated with 3-mil nickel. This was accomplished in a small electroplating plant in Belleville, N.J., named Bart Laboratory, where I made sure there were no pinholes and the plating on the steel was sound.
