Amano calls for high-level nuclear safety conference

Yukiya Amano, director general of the International Atomic Energy Agency, told member countries on March 28 that a high-level nuclear safety conference should be held at the IAEA's headquarters in Vienna before the summer. Amano issued the call during a special briefing on the Fukushima Daiichi nuclear accident in Japan. The Fukushima crisis has presented the agency and the international community with a major challenge, Amano said, adding that it is "vitally important that we learn the right lessons from what happened on March 11 and afterwards in order to strengthen nu- clear sarety throughout the world."
