NRC issues revised LLW policy statement

The Nuclear Regulatory Commission has issued a revised policy statement on low-level radioactive waste management and volume reduction. The revised policy statement, which went into effect on May 1, the day it was published in the Federal Register, replaces the NRC's 1981 "Policy Statement on Low-Level Waste Volume Reduction," which encouraged NRC licensees to take steps to reduce the amount of waste generated and, once generated, to reduce the volume of the waste.
