Chernobyl project reaches new landmark

The second half of the New Safe Confinement, the giant structure being built over the old shelter covering the destroyed Chernobyl-4 reactor, was successfully lifted to its full height of 110 meters in a daylong operation on October 24. Subject to weather conditions, the two halves of the new structure will be joined before the end of the year. The New Safe Confinement will transform the site of the 1986 accident into an environmentally safe and secure area. The arch-shaped structure will be 165 meters long, will have a span of 260 meters, and will weigh over 30,000 metric tons. The structure's frame is a lattice construction of tubular steel members built on two longitudinal concrete beams.
