DOE begins recovery work at WIPP

Following a radiological event at the Department of Energy's Waste Isolation Pilot Plant (WIPP), the DOE and its site management and operations contractor, Nuclear Waste Partnership (NWP), announced on March 9 that they have initiated the first phase of an underground recovery process that will lead to the resumption of nuclear waste disposal operations. The DOE and NWP said that they were expecting to send personnel into WIPP s underground facility "as soon as the end of the week" to characterize the mine's stability and attempt to identify the source of the release.
